Sparky and the King takes readers back to 1960. Fidel Castro has just taken over Cuba, Jack Kennedy is in the White House, and Elvis Presley is preparing a Louisiana Hayride comeback concert now that he's out of the Army. Enter Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby who is being sent on a secret mission by the mob - stop the local Klan and their hired hit man from assassinating Elvis Presley and ending the perceived threat of rock 'n roll to White society. Ruby's real challenge, however, is finding a way to make it back to Dallas alive once his mission is accomplished because the mob boss who hired him believes that "three men can keep a secret... if two of them are dead."

Sparky and the King, a highly intense thriller involving the King of rock and roll, Elvis Presley, and the very enigmatic Jack Ruby, will leave readers wanting this story to continue. This novel brings to life an era that has never been adequately laid to rest. The early 1960's have been theorized, analyzed, debated, and the topic of many historians as well as casual human interest discussions. Baldwin's twist involving Elvis and Ruby, along with factual events and well known southern landmarks and still famous restaurants, such as Herby-K's, Pete Harris Cafe, and Southern Maid Donuts, keep readers enthralled and continually on the edge of reality. The assassination of JFK has continued to baffle the world, and Jack Ruby's role is right there with it. After reading this novel, one may believe they've reached a step closer in finding the answer to the ongoing question of who really shot JFK.
As I was reading the all-to-real account of events, I had to remind myself that it was partially fiction. It is so well written, I felt transported back to a time when money and power bought and sold more than assets. A time when the law was gray, and lives were precariously teetering on the edge of accepting change or fighting a future that many couldn't accept, and power came into play using muscle and guns, is the makeup of a decade with many facets, the 1960's.
Highly recommended for a ride back in time!

I read this book and was captured right away.
Well done!
Dan Baldwin has crafted an enthralling story with a mix of well-drawn historical and fictional characters that any reader will find fascinating and believable. His research into the time period is impeccable, providing a foundation for the story that will resonate with everyone, whether having lived through the period or experiencing it vicariously through Baldwin's crystal clear representation of it.
This is truly an exceptional and unique effort by a gifted writer and story teller. The book clearly demonstrates Baldwin's range as an author.
Mr. Baldwin knows what he is doing with literature noir. Kudos! The story pulled me and held me—in the characters, in the conversations, and in the action. Of course we KNOW what does NOT happen, but we enjoy the ride through a mixture of history and fiction. Picking Jack Ruby as a central character brilliant!
Growing up in this area and during this time. I simply could not put this book down...Great read.
I am a big fan of Dan Baldwin and this is his best book yet. The twists and turns are fantastic. You go in knowing that the King won't get killed but finding out how Ruby saves him just keeps you turning the page. A great read
Being born and raised in Shreveport, I recognized almost every place mentioned in this book. Dan really captured the culture and attitude of Shreveport/Bossier in 1960. Although a novel, this book reads like a factual depiction of actual events. Enjoyed it very much and would highly recommend it.
